What is Bedwetting?
Bedwetting, or primary nocturnal enuresis, is a condition that can affect individuals of all ages but is particularly common in children. While it is normal for young children to struggle with bed wetting as they learn bladder control, primary nocturnal enuresis is a condition where an individual will still wet the bed despite having developed bladder control. As children generally grow out of bed wetting, frequent bouts of primary nocturnal enuresis could indicate a more serious issue.
Signs and Symptoms of Bedwetting
Commonly, children and anyone else above the age of seven who still experience bed wetting are considered to suffer from primary nocturnal enuresis. Other symptoms that are commonly experienced with primary nocturnal enuresis include wetting the bed at least twice a week for more than 3-months, sudden onset of bedwetting after months or even years of no incidents, painful urination, snoring, hard stools, pink or red urine, and a feeling of unquenchable thirst.
How the Upper Cervical Spine Affects Bedwetting
The upper cervical spine shelters and supports the function of the spinal cord, and significant components of the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS is responsible for sending and receiving electrical signals from around the body, communicating with essential organs like the bladder to instruct the release or retention of urine.
When one or more upper cervical vertebrae are misaligned, the ensuing inflammation can interrupt or even block these electrical, resulting in miscommunication between the CNS and the bladder and ultimately, bedwetting.
How Our Upper Cervical Treatment for Bedwetting Works
Dr. Gordon Elder, our in-house chiropractic specialist, is an expert in the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique. This non-traditional chiropractic treatment focuses specifically on restoring the upper cervical spine, using gentle and precise spinal correction techniques.
Dr. Elder’s treatment involves identifying and treating bedwetting by using a two-step system. Firstly, patients will attend a 25–30-minute consultation to determine if a vertebral misalignment is causing their bedwetting. After this consultation, Dr. Elder will deliver a formal diagnosis and you’ll have the opportunity to ask Dr. Elder any questions about your condition. This process will involve the use of advanced 3-D imaging diagnostic techniques to pinpoint the specific location of any misalignments.
For your treatment, Dr. Elder will use the Blair chiropractic adjustment techniques to push the misaligned vertebrae back into their natural position, thereby allowing the body’s natural healing mechanisms to resume and maintain regular nerve function.
Following your initial treatment, patients will need to return for regular check-ups (for at least 3-5 months) to ensure the adjustment has set. Most patients average between 10 and 15 appointments with Dr. Elder to achieve long-lasting/permanent results.
