The Benefits of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care for Seniors

Aging can bring about various health challenges, some of which include chronic pain, decreased mobility, and a diminished quality of life. Upper cervical chiropractic care, focusing on the alignment and health of the upper spine, can be an effective strategy to help seniors manage these issues and improve their overall health and well-being. This article delves into the details of how upper cervical chiropractic care can benefit the elderly population.

Understanding Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

Upper cervical chiropractic care centers on the precise alignment of the top two vertebrae of the spine, the atlas (C1) and axis (C2). These vertebrae are critical for the normal functioning of the central nervous system, as they protect the brainstem and allow nerve communication to flow freely through the body. Misalignments in these areas can lead to a variety of health issues, including chronic pain, decreased mobility, and various neurological conditions.

Reducing Chronic Pain

One of the primary benefits of upper cervical chiropractic care for seniors is the potential for pain relief. Aging often leads to degenerative changes in the spine, which can result in chronic pain conditions. By correcting misalignments in the upper cervical spine, chiropractic care can alleviate pain and discomfort, enhance nerve communication, and promote the body's innate healing capabilities.

Improving Mobility and Balance

Aging can also result in decreased mobility and balance, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. Upper cervical chiropractic care can help enhance mobility and coordination by ensuring that the nervous system is functioning optimally. Correct alignment of the upper cervical spine can also improve proprioception—the body's ability to perceive its own position in space—thereby improving balance and reducing the risk of falls.

Enhancing Quality of Life

Chronic pain, decreased mobility, and the fear of falling can severely impact a senior's quality of life, leading to decreased activity levels and social isolation. By helping to alleviate pain and improve mobility, upper cervical chiropractic care can significantly enhance a senior's overall quality of life, enabling them to remain active and engaged in their golden years.

Managing Age-Related Health Conditions

Numerous age-related health conditions such as arthritis, Parkinson's disease, and osteoporosis may benefit from upper cervical chiropractic care. The gentle and precise adjustments can help manage these conditions by reducing inflammation, relieving pressure on the nerves, and enhancing overall nerve function.

Maintaining Overall Health

Finally, by enhancing nerve communication, upper cervical chiropractic care can help maintain overall health. A well-functioning nervous system supports the functioning of all other systems in the body, including the immune, digestive, and cardiovascular systems.

Upper cervical chiropractic care offers numerous benefits for seniors, from pain relief and improved mobility to enhanced quality of life and overall health. However, it's essential for seniors to consult with a healthcare provider before beginning any new treatment plan, including chiropractic care. Once cleared, seniors can work with a trained upper cervical chiropractor to create a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs and health goals. Through this specialized care, seniors can enjoy their golden years with less pain, more mobility, and improved health.

Uncovering the Connection Between Fatigue and Chronic Pain

Fatigue and chronic pain are two intertwined phenomena that significantly impact an individual's quality of life. They often occur together, creating a cycle that is hard to break. This article delves into the complex relationship between fatigue and chronic pain, highlighting the underlying mechanisms, impacts, and possible management strategies.

Understanding Chronic Pain and Fatigue

Chronic pain is defined as persistent or recurrent pain that lasts for more than three months. It could arise from various conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine, and neuropathy, among others. On the other hand, fatigue is not merely feeling tired, but a sustained sense of exhaustion that doesn't go away with rest.

The Intersection of Chronic Pain and Fatigue

One of the key factors connecting chronic pain and fatigue is the body's stress system, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In response to chronic pain, the HPA axis continuously releases stress hormones that, over time, can lead to wear and tear on the body— a concept known as 'allostatic load'. The allostatic load can contribute to fatigue, further exacerbating the experience of pain.

Furthermore, both conditions often share common psychological aspects. Depression, anxiety, and poor sleep, frequently associated with chronic pain, can also significantly contribute to feelings of fatigue. Fatigue, in turn, can enhance pain perception, creating a vicious cycle that fuels both conditions.

The Impact of Fatigue on Chronic Pain

Fatigue can increase the perception of pain in several ways. Firstly, it can lower pain thresholds, making individuals more sensitive to pain stimuli. Secondly, fatigue can affect mood, leading to increased stress levels that amplify pain perception. Lastly, fatigue often disrupts sleep, a crucial time for the body to heal and restore itself. Lack of quality sleep can, therefore, intensify the experience of chronic pain.

Managing Fatigue to Alleviate Chronic Pain

Understanding the complex relationship between fatigue and chronic pain is crucial to their effective management. Treatment should ideally be multidimensional

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT can help individuals develop effective coping strategies to manage their pain and fatigue. It teaches individuals how to challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, helping to break the cycle of chronic pain and fatigue.

Physical Activity: Regular exercise can be beneficial for both chronic pain and fatigue. It can improve strength and flexibility, reduce joint stiffness, boost mood, and improve sleep quality.

Good Sleep: Practicing good sleep hygiene, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule, creating a quiet and comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding caffeine and electronics before bedtime, can help improve sleep quality, reducing fatigue and potentially alleviating chronic pain.

Mind-Body Techniques: Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and yoga can help manage stress, improve sleep, and potentially reduce the perception of pain and fatigue.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care: This can be a valuable tool in treating fatigue and chronic pain. This specialized approach focuses on the precise alignment of the top two vertebrae in the spine, which are critical for the proper functioning of the central nervous system. Misalignments in these areas can disrupt nerve communication, leading to chronic pain and fatigue. Through gentle, targeted adjustments, upper cervical chiropractic care can correct these misalignments, potentially alleviating symptoms by restoring normal nerve function and enhancing the body's innate healing capabilities. By improving spinal health, it can also promote better sleep quality, further helping to combat fatigue.

Fatigue and chronic pain share a reciprocal relationship where each can exacerbate the other, creating a vicious cycle that is difficult to break. However, with a comprehensive understanding of this connection and a multidimensional treatment approach, individuals can learn to manage both conditions, ultimately improving their quality of life.

How We Treat Fatigue and Chronic Pain

The origin of many musculoskeletal issues often leads back to the upper cervical spine. At Blair Chiropractic Clinic, based in Lubbock, Texas, our in-house specialist, Dr. Gordon Elder, focuses on this crucial area. A proficient practitioner of the Blair Chiropractic Technique, Dr. Elder leverages this contemporary method, which blends high-tech tools with hands-on treatments. The Blair Technique provides a non-invasive, medication-free therapeutic option for many individuals enduring persistent pain.

Dr. Elder employs a tripartite approach to upper cervical care, yielding significant success. The process starts with an examination utilizing advanced 3D diagnostic imaging tools to accurately understand and measure your distinct anatomical structure. This meticulous initial evaluation removes the uncertainty, enabling Dr. Elder to focus precisely on the problem area.

By zeroing in on the exact issue, the manual corrections Dr. Elder performs can be more exact and require much less force compared to conventional chiropractic techniques. This not only ensures a more comfortable experience for patients but also necessitates fewer visits while allowing the corrections to maintain their position longer.

The final stage of Dr. Elder's treatment plan revolves around consistent preventative care. Incorporating regular chiropractic assessments into your usual healthcare routine can help prevent new problems from surfacing and allows Dr. Elder to promptly address any emerging issues.

Tailbone Pain: What Could Be The Cause?

The coccyx is made up of three to five fused vertebrae at the base of your spine. It is commonly called the "tailbone." The coccygeal nerves, the smallest nerves in the spinal column, run through the coccyx vertebrae. There are tendons, muscles, and ligaments that connect to the tailbone.

If you suffer from lower back pain, it could be that the nerves or tissue surrounding your tailbone are being compressed or pinched.

Signs and Symptoms of Tailbone Issues

Pain is generally the first sign that something is wrong with your tailbone. At the base of your spine, where your lower back meets your buttocks, you may feel an ache, stabbing pain, or cramp-like pain. The pain may shoot up into the lower back, sideways into the hips, or down into the legs. Depending on the severity of the problem, the pain may range from mild to excruciating.

Tailbone pain may come and go for some; for others, it may be a constant, nagging pain that interferes with activity or is aggravated when sitting for too long. In more serious cases it may impede your mobility or cause numbness and tingling in the legs and/or feet.

Causes of Tailbone Pain

There are many potential causes of tailbone pain, but it generally comes down to compression or pinching of nerves, discs, and/or tissue. This may be due to a fall, accident, or other such blow to the tailbone area.

Often the pain in the tailbone begins much higher—like in the neck. The upper cervical spine is at the other end of the spine. It runs through your neck and is the most vulnerable part of the spine. Any jolt, accident, fall, injury, or even poor posture can cause a misalignment in the upper cervical spine. Once this happens, the body shifts to accommodate this misalignment, causing strain and stress on other joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons throughout the rest of the musculoskeletal system.

Sometimes the only way to permanently address your tailbone pain is to have your upper cervical spine corrected.

How We Treat Tailbone Pain

At the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas, we offer patients with tailbone pain a natural, non-invasive, drug-free treatment to help combat their tailbone pain. The Blair Chiropractic Technique combines state-of-the-art technology and specialized hands-on adjustments to help restore the health of the upper cervical spine, bring balance back to the musculoskeletal system, and allow the body's natural healing processes to take over.

Our Dr. Gordon Elder is a specialist in the Blair technique and has a three-part treatment plan. The first part involves a thorough health screening and 3D diagnostic imaging scans to help him more accurately assess the problem.

Dr. Elder's second step is when the healing commences. With technology allowing him a more exact assessment he can make gentle adjustments with precision to target problem areas. Once the upper cervical spine's natural alignment is restored, the body's healing mechanisms can kick into gear.

The final step, and perhaps most important for your ongoing health, is preventative care. Dr. Elder recommends regular chiropractic visits to ensure the spine remains in a healthy, aligned state.

If you have been suffering from tailbone pain, contact Dr. Elder for more information. Our areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

Spotting Whiplash Symptoms After a Car Accident

Whiplash is a common neck injury often associated with car accidents, especially rear-end collisions. This injury occurs when a sudden, forceful jerk of the head causes rapid back-and-forth movement, similar to the cracking of a whip. The rapid movement can stretch and damage the muscles and tendons in the neck, leading to a range of symptoms. Recognizing these symptoms is crucial to ensuring timely treatment and preventing further complications. This article discusses the signs to look out for that may indicate whiplash following a car accident.

Neck Pain and Stiffness

The most common symptom of whiplash is neck pain. The discomfort can range from a mild annoyance to severe, debilitating pain. The pain is often worsened by neck movement and is typically accompanied by stiffness. This results in a decreased range of motion and difficulty turning the head side to side or up and down.

Headaches

Whiplash-related headaches usually start at the base of the skull and radiate towards the forehead. They are often the result of injury to the neck muscles, ligaments, or nerves, or they may be due to a concussion that occurred at the same time as the whiplash injury.

Dizziness and Vertigo

Some people may experience dizziness or a sensation of spinning, known as vertigo, following a car accident. These symptoms might be due to injuries to the neck or brain, or changes in the inner ear's balance mechanisms.

Visual Disturbances

In some cases, victims of a car accident might encounter blurred vision or difficulties focusing. While this is not as common as other symptoms, it is essential to pay attention to any changes in vision following an accident.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is another potential symptom of whiplash. It can be continuous or intermittent and may vary in volume. It's a symptom that should not be ignored, as it can indicate a more serious injury.

Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances

After a whiplash injury, some people might feel unusually tired or have trouble sleeping. This might be due to the body’s response to the injury, pain disrupting sleep, or possibly from a mild traumatic brain injury or concussion.

Cognitive and Emotional Issues

Less commonly recognized symptoms of whiplash include cognitive and emotional changes. These can include memory problems, difficulties concentrating, irritability, and feelings of depression. These symptoms are often the result of either the physical discomfort associated with whiplash or a mild traumatic brain injury.

Getting Help

If you experience any of these symptoms after a car accident, it is essential to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Even if the symptoms seem minor initially, they can become more severe over time and lead to chronic problems if left untreated.

A healthcare provider will likely use a combination of physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests to diagnose whiplash. By understanding the signs of whiplash and acting promptly, you can ensure the best possible outcome for your health and well-being after a car accident.

How We Treat Whiplash

Our resident expert, Dr. Gordon Elder, is a highly proficient practitioner of the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique. This technique is distinctive in its gentle, low-impact approach to correct and align vertebral misalignments in the upper cervical spine.

The initial course of action for treating whiplash taken by Dr. Elder involves a concise physical examination of your spine. This is to ascertain the presence of any misalignment in the upper cervical spine. Upon detecting a misalignment, Dr. Elder employs a host of advanced diagnostic tools, including cutting-edge 3D imaging technologies, to accurately identify the misalignment's precise location. Following this, you'll have the opportunity to review your scans and engage in a discussion with Dr. Elder regarding your spinal health.

Subsequently, Dr. Elder will use a series of accurate, non-invasive adjustment methods to reposition any misaligned vertebrae to their natural location. This aids in triggering the body's innate healing mechanisms to restore and uphold proper functionality in the spinal column and the surrounding musculature.

After the initial adjustment, patients will revisit for regular check-ups that are gradually spaced further apart. This is done to ensure the adjustment remains intact for three months. These check-up sessions typically consist of 10 to 15 appointments within a 3-5-month timeframe.

If whiplash is negatively affecting your everyday life activities, don't hesitate to reach out to Dr. Elder to discuss healing your upper cervical spine. Blair Chiropractic Clinic, based in Lubbock, Texas, also extends its services to Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, El Paso in Texas, and Hobbs in New Mexico.

There's A Connection Between TMJ and Sleep Disorders

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are like two hinges on each side of your jaw, connecting the jaw to the skull. These hinges allow you to open your mouth, talk, chew, and do any activity requiring movement of your jaw. More than 44 people in the United States alone suffer from some level of TMJ pain.

Of the 44 million TMJ sufferers, 40 million of them have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder as well. It is not uncommon for the problems to go hand in hand.

What Causes TMJ?

TMJ is often due to a misalignment of the upper cervical spine. This is the uppermost part of the spine that runs through the neck—when the vertebrae in the neck are misaligned due to poor posture, an accident, or rough activities, it causes a domino effect throughout the musculoskeletal system, putting strain and stress on other joints.

How TMJ Disorder Interferes with Sleep

Sufferers of TMJ pain typically grind their teeth in their sleep. This grinding is bad for the temporomandibular joints and the teeth and generally makes jaw pain worse. This jaw pain can be bad enough to wake you out of sound sleep or keep you on the lighter surface of sleep so that you're not getting proper rest.

Often, TMJ pain is caused by the jaw joints being misaligned. This can cause your airway to be obstructed when you fall asleep. For some people, this results in snoring, breathing problems, and sleep apnea (when you temporarily stop breathing). These problems can also keep you from entering the deeper stages of sleep.

Sleep apnea is particularly dangerous, increasing your risk of abnormal heartbeats, lower blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, and stroke.

How We Treat TMJ Patients to Help with Sleep Disorders

Our goal is to get at the root of the problem so that we can alleviate the pain of TMJ dysfunction and relieve sleep disorders. We do this by offering a natural, non-invasive, drug-free treatment plan that involves correcting misalignments of the upper cervical spine.

Dr. Gordon Elder is our upper cervical spine specialist at the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Elder is a practitioner of the Blair Chiropractic Technique, a modern technique that combines gentle hands-on care with highly advanced technology.

Dr. Elder begins his treatment with an in-depth health screening. Included in this screening are 3D diagnostic imaging tools to help him best assess your unique anatomy.

The second step of Dr. Elder's treatment is the healing phase. Due to superior scanning, he can make exact adjustments with precision. This allows him to use a gentle touch that does not involve the jarring twists and jerks associated with traditional chiropractic techniques.

Once the upper cervical spine's proper alignment is restored, the strain is removed from the rest of the musculoskeletal system and the body can begin healing and correcting itself. This should relieve TMJ pain and result in improved sleep at night.

A final step of Dr. Elder's treatment plan is ongoing preventative care to ensure the spine remains in a healthy state.

If you're suffering from TMJ pain and sleep disorders, contact Dr. Elder for more information. Our areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

Managing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's: How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Can Help

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are two neurodegenerative disorders that affect millions of people worldwide. These conditions can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, as well as pose challenges for their caregivers. While there is no cure for Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, various treatment approaches aim to manage symptoms and slow disease progression. One such alternative therapy is upper cervical chiropractic care, which offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to support individuals with these conditions. In this article, we will explore the potential benefits of upper cervical chiropractic care for managing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Understanding Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder characterized by memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. Parkinson's disease, on the other hand, primarily affects the motor system, leading to tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with movement. Both conditions involve the degeneration of specific brain areas and disruptions in neuronal communication.

The Role of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

Upper cervical chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the uppermost vertebrae in the neck, known as the atlas (C1), and the central nervous system. This specialized branch of chiropractic care emphasizes the alignment and optimal function of the atlas vertebra, which houses the brainstem, a critical pathway for neural communication. By ensuring proper alignment and movement of the atlas, upper cervical chiropractic care aims to improve overall nervous system function and restore balance within the body.

Benefits of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

Enhances Nervous System Function: The nervous system plays a vital role in regulating cognitive function, movement, and coordination. Misalignments or subluxations in the upper cervical spine can interfere with neural pathways, potentially contributing to the progression of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Upper cervical chiropractic adjustments aim to correct these misalignments, improving nervous system function and facilitating optimal communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Reduces Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is believed to be a contributing factor in neurodegenerative diseases. Research suggests that upper cervical chiropractic care can help reduce inflammation by alleviating stress on the nervous system and promoting better immune system function. By reducing inflammation, the progression of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's may be slowed, providing individuals with a better quality of life.

Alleviates Pain and Discomfort: Individuals with Parkinson's disease may experience muscle stiffness, joint pain, and discomfort. Upper cervical chiropractic adjustments can help relieve tension in the neck and spine, potentially reducing pain and discomfort associated with these conditions. Moreover, by improving spinal alignment, upper cervical chiropractic care may positively influence the nervous system's pain processing mechanisms.

Supports Overall Well-being: Alzheimer's and Parkinson's can significantly impact an individual's emotional and mental well-being. Upper cervical chiropractic care takes a holistic approach to health by addressing physical, emotional, and mental aspects. Through adjustments and related therapies, this type of care may help reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being.

Complements Conventional Treatment: Upper cervical chiropractic care is not intended to replace conventional medical treatment for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Instead, it can complement existing therapies by providing additional support in managing symptoms and improving overall health. Integrating upper cervical chiropractic care into a comprehensive treatment plan may offer a more holistic approach to the management of these neurodegenerative diseases.

Upper cervical chiropractic care offers a potential adjunctive approach for managing the symptoms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. By focusing on the alignment and function of the atlas vertebra, this specialized chiropractic technique aims to optimize nervous system function, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and support overall well-being. It is essential for individuals with these neurodegenerative diseases to work closely with their healthcare team to determine if upper cervical chiropractic care is a suitable addition to their comprehensive treatment plan.

How We Help with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease

Maintaining the health and alignment of your upper cervical spine contributes significantly towards relieving stress on joints, muscles, and ligaments across your body. This practice enhances mobility and coordination while promoting nerve functionality. It is particularly beneficial for managing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson's disease symptoms, thereby boosting overall quality of life.

With his extensive expertise in the Blair Chiropractic Technique, Dr. Gordon Elder of Blair Chiropractic Clinic employs this method, which prioritizes upper cervical health by leveraging state-of-the-art 3D imaging tools to evaluate individual anatomical differences accurately.

Dr. Elder identifies any spinal misalignments and uses precise, low-pressure adjustments to restore the spine's healthy alignment. This method stands apart from traditional chiropractic techniques, which often involve abrupt movements. Blair practitioners, like Dr. Elder, adopt a more gentle and comfortable approach to treatment.

Many patients experience immediate relief after the first corrective procedure. The benefits keep multiplying as the body commences its healing process after the corrections. During subsequent visits, Dr. Elder ensures the alignments are maintaining their position.

In addition to immediate treatments, Dr. Elder advises regular chiropractic check-ups as part of a preventative care strategy to address potential issues before they escalate.

Should you be receiving treatment for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson's disease, you may want to consider incorporating chiropractic care into your healthcare regimen. Dr. Elder provides his services in Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso, Texas, as well as Hobbs, New Mexico.

Peripheral Vertigo and Central Vertigo: What's The Difference?

Are you suffering from vertigo? If so, which kind? Did you know that there is more than one kind of vertigo? And did you know that one kind may indicate a much more serious health problem than the other?

If you are suffering from symptoms of vertigo, you might think it's not serious and you'll just wait for the problem to pass. Depending on the type of vertigo you have, this could be a mistake. Here is what you need to know.

What Is Vertigo?

Vertigo is a dizzy sensation that makes you feel like you or the room around you is spinning. It is very disorienting and can cause you to lose your balance. Some other common symptoms of vertigo include headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

There are two types of vertigo you should be aware of:  peripheral vertigo and central vertigo.

What Is Peripheral Vertigo?

Peripheral vertigo is the most common type of vertigo, usually caused by a problem in the inner ear. It may be caused by an infection in the inner ear, a buildup of fluid, or harmless calcium crystal deposits.

Misalignment of the upper cervical spine, located in the neck, may inflame the area and put pressure on tiny tubes causing blockages and drainage problems. This can cause fluid to build up, infections to fester, or calcium crystals to become trapped.

What Is Central Vertigo?

Central vertigo may indicate a potentially more serious problem. The symptoms are caused by a breakdown of communication in the Central Nervous System (CNS). Messages being sent from the brain are being disrupted. This may be due to a more serious condition such as stroke, tumors, migraines, or multiple sclerosis (MS).

Once again, the upper cervical spine plays a key role. Starting just below the brain stem where it connects to the spinal cord, any misalignments of the upper cervical spine may cause inflammation and swelling. Nerves may be compressed and/or impinged, leading to disrupted nerve signals.

How We Treat Vertigo

At the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas, we try to get to the root of both peripheral and central vertigo by treating the upper cervical spine. Our Dr. Gordon Elder is a specialist in the Blair Chiropractic Technique. This technique combines the best of modern technology and specialized manual methods to restore the upper cervical spine's alignment.

Blair practitioners start with state-of-the-art technology to assess the condition of your spine. They are then able to apply a lighter touch with more precision to make adjustments, making for a much more comfortable, gentler chiropractic experience.

Dr. Elder has a three-step plan for treating vertigo, which begins with a thorough screening and advanced 3D diagnostic imaging tools. Once he assesses your unique anatomy, he's able to make corrections with low-pressure techniques to bring your spine back to proper alignment.

As a third and final step, Dr. Elder recommends adding chiropractic care to your regular healthcare routine. Check-ups will ensure alignments hold and will allow the doctor to nip any new problems in the bud.

If you're looking for a safe, natural, drug-free, non-invasive treatment for vertigo, contact Dr. Elder to see how he can help you. Our areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

Are You Waking Up with A Sore Neck?

One thing that can get your day off to a bad start is a sore neck. Waking up with neck pain or a stiff neck can make everything you do to get ready and get on with your day more difficult. Whether it's getting dressed, doing chores, or driving to work, your neck pain will rear its ugly head with every wrong move to remind you that it's still there.

A sore neck can interfere with your ability to slip into a deep, restorative sleep. Neck pain can jolt you out of a sound sleep, or it keeps you just skimming the surface of sleep all night. As the problem continues night after night, sleep deprivation just builds until you can't take it anymore.

What Might Be Causing Nighttime and Morning Neck Pain

The first culprit to look at for your neck pain is your bed. Look at your mattress: is it in good shape? Is it overdue for a flip? Maybe it's time for a replacement altogether.

Next, check your pillow. Is it too full or too hard so that laying on it causes you to bend your neck? Or is it too soft and flat so that it can't support your head? You might need to rearrange or replace your pillows. When you lay down, your head and neck should be straight and in alignment with your spine.

Perhaps you're sleeping on your stomach. The stomach is the worst position for your neck because it forces you to sleep with your neck turned and causes muscle strain.

Finally, your neck pain may be due to your poor posture in the daytime. Do you spend a lot of time with your head thrust forward or bent down while you look at a screen or work a machine? Poor posture will definitely result in aches and pains in the neck and back.

How Upper Cervical Care Can Help

The upper cervical spine is the uppermost part of the spine that runs through the neck. This part of the spine is the most vulnerable to misalignments. Any jolts, accidents, falls, injuries, or even prolonged poor posture can cause a vertebra in the neck to slip out of alignment.

Once the neck is misaligned, there is little you can do to permanently alleviate the pain until you have the proper alignment restored. For this, most people turn to chiropractors.

How We Treat A Sore Neck

Chiropractic care offers a safe, non-invasive, drug-free, natural way to help relieve neck pain. Our Dr. Gordon Elder here at the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas specializes in upper cervical care. Dr. Elder is a practitioner of the Blair Chiropractic Technique, an elite technique that utilizes cutting-edge technology and modern manual manipulations to restore your spine's health and to keep it in good health.

Dr. Elder's plan is threefold for his patients. The first step is a thorough health screening, including scans with 3D imaging diagnostic tools. This allows Dr. Elder to pinpoint the source of the problem.

The second step is the healing phase, which involves low-pressure adjustments. Because of advanced technology scanning Dr. Elder can use precision rather than force. The Blair Technique is very gentle and comfortable.

Finally, the third step is preventative care. Dr. Elder recommends adding regular chiropractic visits to your healthcare routine to nip any future problems in the bud.

Don't let neck pain continue to interfere with your ability to sleep and get through your day. Contact Dr. Elder for a consultation. Dr. Elder's areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

Fast-Paced World of Stress and Its Impact On The Body

Stress is part of life, so many of us just accept that and go on without thinking about it too much. This is very unfortunate because the impact stress can have on the body is very serious—and potentially deadly.

People in the healthcare industry call stress the "silent killer." Not only does stress impact the quality of your life, but it contributes to some of the most common causes of death, such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

Impact of Stress on the Body

Long-term exposure to stress can leave you feeling drained, and fatigued, and rob you of your energy. People with prolonged stress often report headaches, tension, aches, and pains.

Stress may affect the digestive system and cause stomach aches, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Some people with stress lose their appetite and don't get enough nourishment, while others may eat for comfort and gain weight.

People with nervousness and anxiety may experience an increased heart rate, chest pains, and insomnia. Anxiety can also run down the immune system, resulting in more frequent colds and/or infections.

Stress can interfere with your ability to focus or quiet your mind. You may find it hard to push aside your worries and focus on the tasks at hand. This can result in serious mistakes and accidents.

How to Combat Stress with Chiropractic Care

While you can't escape stress altogether, you can do things to help manage it and reduce the impact that it has on the body. Many people seek chiropractic care to help with negative symptoms due to stress.

The brain and the spinal column make up the nervous system, which plays a major role in the body's reaction to stress. When the spine is misaligned, it can cause nerves to misfire, disrupting communication between the brain and various systems in the body.

Chiropractors restore the proper alignment of the spine, which relieves stress and tension in the body. Once a spine is realigned, it reduces inflammation and swelling, relieving any compressed nerves. At that point, the body's natural healing processes take over and can begin to repair some of the damage caused by stress and restore health.

Vertigo Can Be Caused By Ear Inflammation

If you've ever experienced vertigo, you know how terrible it can be. It's not life-threatening, but few experiences will leave you so exhausted, confused, and feeling sick.

The truth is, vertigo is a fairly common problem. There are a few different conditions that may cause bouts of vertigo, the most common one being inflammation-induced vertigo.

Signs and Symptoms of Vertigo

Vertigo will make you feel extremely dizzy and disoriented. Unlike a dizzy spell, where you feel like you're spinning, vertigo will make you feel like the whole room you're in is spinning. It makes you feel as though the ground beneath your feet isn't stable, as though the world is spinning out of control.

During a vertigo experience, you can easily lose your balance. It's best to sit or lie down so you don't fall. The spinning and feeling of out-of-control motion may make you nauseous or you may throw up. You may experience a headache, a ringing in the ear, and extreme fatigue from a vertigo episode.

How Inner Ear Inflammation Leads to Vertigo

The inner ear is comprised of many fine tubes. It's where your body's natural motion sensor is located. It controls your balance and helps you understand how you are oriented in relation to your environment.

When there is inflammation around the tubes or a build-up of fluid in the tubes of the inner ear, it can throw off the body's ability to keep balanced and oriented. Inflammation can come from an ear infection, sinus problems, or a misalignment of the spine.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

The neck area is a vulnerable part of the body prone to injury. The uppermost part of the spine sits below the base of the skull and runs through the neck, close to the tubes in the inner ear. If the vertebrae in the upper cervical spine are misaligned it can cause inflammation, swelling, and blockages in the tubes.

Dr. Gordon Elder of the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas can help with misalignments that may be leading to chronic vertigo. Adjusting the spine will help reduce inflammation, relieve swelling, and unblock passages.

Dr. Elder practices the Blair Chiropractic technique, a safe, non-invasive, drug-free treatment for vertigo and inner ear blockages. And, Dr. Elder's treatments begin with advanced diagnostic 3D screening tools to pinpoint the source of the trouble. The next phase of his treatment involves realignment of the spine using specialized, gentle methods. Since the diagnostic tools allow Dr. Elder to approach the spine with more precision, he is able to use a gentle touch to make adjustments. Beyond that, Dr. Elder recommends ongoing preventative treatment.

Vertigo can be debilitating and really interfere with your life. Contact Dr. Elder today to see how he can help you. His areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

Sciatica Relief Can Be Found In Your Neck

Sciatica is a painful, sometimes debilitating condition that causes pain in the lower back, buttocks, and sometimes down into the legs. For some people, it's just a nagging pain that might make their day just a little miserable, while for other people it may prevent them from working, getting around, or doing the things they love to do.

When sciatic nerve pain keeps coming back, it could be a sign that the problem is not below the waist where you feel it the worst—the root of the problem could be in your neck.

Signs and Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatic nerve pain is generally localized to the buttock area. There may be a burning or aching deep inside, and it may interfere with your mobility. Sciatic pain can radiate upwards into the lower back, or downward into the legs. In the worst cases, the pain may go all the way down to the toes.

Most people may feel sciatica only on one side, but others may have pain to some degree on both sides. The pain may be aggravated by walking, bending, lifting or carrying heavy objects, doing certain exercises, or sitting or lying down for too long.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatic pain is caused by the compression or damage of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and legs. The nerve compression or damage may be due to a bulging disc, an overly-tightened muscle, or bone spurs on the spine.

Often, the source of problems with the sciatic nerve originates much higher. Often, it is a misalignment of the upper cervical spine that causes a domino effect down the rest of the back.

The upper cervical spine is the top part of the spine that runs through the neck and is prone to injury. Once there is a misalignment in the upper cervical spine, it throws the entire musculoskeletal system off-kilter. Until the upper cervical spine is realigned, problems will continue to reappear.

How We Treat Sciatica

Dr. Gordon Elder of the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas offers patients a natural, drug-free, non-invasive treatment that helps reduce or eliminate sciatic pain. Dr. Elder uses advanced diagnostic tools and modern, specialized methods to restore the upper cervical spine's proper alignment. Once this is done, many other necks, shoulder, and back problems fade as the strain on them is removed.

Dr. Elder is a specialist in the Blair Chiropractic Technique. Blair practitioners use state-of-the-art 3D diagnostic imaging technology to perform superior assessments. Once they understand your unique anatomy, the next step is to facilitate healing through precise adjustments using gentle pressure.

After the patient begins treatments and the spine is realigned, the body's natural healing mechanisms kick into gear to help restore health and repair damage. Beyond that, Dr. Elder recommends regular check-ups to ensure the alignment is holding.

If your sciatic nerve pain is getting you down, contact Dr. Elder to hear how he can help you. Our areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

Can A Misaligned Spine Impede Your Strength?

Do you ever feel like your strength is sapped too quickly, or that you just feel weak? Do you feel like your performance is suffering in physical activities, or you're having a harder and harder time keeping up with your daily activities?

There can be a lot of things behind a lack of strength. Perhaps you can eat better, or perhaps you need more sleep. Perhaps you're not getting enough exercise, or perhaps it's just natural aging.

One thing you may not have thought of is this: your low strength may be due to a misalignment of your spine.

How Muscles Work

Sarcomeres are individual muscle fibers that produce tension. These fibers are responsible for contracting your muscles. When your muscles are at resting length they produce the most tension. The filaments act like pullies to help the muscle generate more strength.

The muscles attach to the back of the spine and the pelvis. They rely on the spine being straight and symmetrical so this pulley system can work.

When the spine is misaligned and the musculoskeletal system is thrown off-balance, muscles on one side are shorter and muscles on the other side are longer. When this imbalance occurs, muscles cannot achieve resting length and cannot then generate maximum strength.

When your strength is decreased, your performance will be impacted.

The Role Nerves Play

When the spine is misaligned, nerves may be pinched or compressed. This causes even more problems as it impedes the flow of nerve signals between the muscles and the brain. Muscles will not be able to function optimally if they cannot effectively communicate with the brain. This can further decrease your strength.

How  a Chiropractor Can Help

Chiropractors are doctors who can restore the alignment of the spine. This allows the nerve signals to flow unimpeded, and balance is achieved so the muscles can reach resting length. Once this is achieved, you will notice a difference in your performance and will be at your strongest.

Since the upper cervical spine is the most vulnerable part of the spine, most misalignments begin there. When the vertebrae in the upper cervical area are misaligned, it causes a domino effect down the rest of the spine.

Chiropractic Care Can Treat Cervical Spondylosis (Neck Arthritis)

Cervical spondylosis is a very scary-sounding name for a very common condition. Because of normal wear and tear, the bones and discs in the neck begin to degenerate. Usually, this happens with age, though some people may notice symptoms sooner rather than later.

Also called degenerative disc disease or neck arthritis, cervical spondylosis is something most people will experience to one degree or another.

Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis

The first signs of neck arthritis are usually pain and stiffness in the neck. When you turn your head from side to side, you may hear a popping or grinding noise. Eventually, you may notice muscle spasms in the neck or shoulders

People with neck arthritis may experience headaches and dizziness or may find there is a weakness or tingling in one or more limbs when the condition is flaring up.

Serious symptoms may include loss of bladder control or facial numbness. If these symptoms occur, you should seek emergency care immediately.

Risk Factors

Aging is the main risk factor, as most people will have neck arthritis to some degree as they age. However, many things can accelerate the condition.

Neck injuries from falls, rough sports, or car accidents may result in damage that causes early onset of cervical spondylosis. Likewise, damage may be done to the neck from poor posture, prolonged sitting, heavy lifting, or being exposed to continuous vibrations (such as with jobs involving driving for long periods).

In addition, a family history of arthritis or smoking may also contribute to the onset of cervical spondylosis.

Living with Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is a progressive disease that can lead to more serious problems down the road. Over time, people with neck arthritis may be at risk for developing herniated discs, bone spurs, or spinal instability.

Nerve compression is also a risk that comes with the condition. When nerves are compressed, the flow of signals between the brain and various parts of the body is disrupted. This can lead to a wide variety of health issues.

The best way to help slow the deterioration of the upper cervical spine is to work with healthcare professionals to manage the condition. Your healthcare provider will be able to examine you and send you for any necessary tests to see the extent of the condition and monitor your progress.  Chiropractors, who specialize in the health and alignment of the spine, are best equipped to help most patients.

How Upper Cervical Care Can Help You

Dr. Elder begins his treatments with a health screening, which includes advanced 3D diagnostic imaging technology so that he can better visualize the problem.

The second step of Dr. Elder's treatment plan is the healing phase. During this phase, he uses low-pressure adjustments to make corrections to the spine. It's so light and quick, you won't even feel it. Once the spine is properly aligned and the body's natural healing mechanisms kick in, you should notice a steady improvement.

Are Migraines Really Affected By Weather?

If you think of a migraine as a headache, you've probably never had one. Migraines are so much worse than regular headaches.

Migraine attacks usually last for days, going through several phases. During these phases, you may experience various aches and pains, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, visual disturbances, ringing in the ears, confusion, light sensitivity, or fatigue. Of course, the entire episode reaches a high point (or perhaps more accurately, a low point) with throbbing, relentless pain.

There are many things that may trigger a migraine, depending on the person. Stress, strong odors, alcoholic beverage consumption, hunger, lack of sleep, or eye strain are all potential triggers. There is one thing that can cause a migraine that most people don't realize: the weather.

How Weather May Trigger a Migraine

You don't notice it, but there is pressure in the atmosphere all around us at all times. Atmospheric air pressure is measured with a barometer. When the barometric pressure drops on the outside,  it can cause an imbalance of pressure in the sinus cavities and/or the inner ear. These pressure changes may trigger a migraine in some people.

A well-known study from Japan showed that when barometric pressure changes, there is an increase in the sale of a popular headache remedy. The observation led scientists to conclude there was a correlation between atmospheric pressure changes and migraines.

Further studies were done on people with chronic migraines, and scientists found that migraines were more likely to occur when atmospheric pressure changed. On the flip side, when atmospheric pressure was higher, significantly fewer migraines were reported.

How The Weather Report Can Help You Prevent Migraines

If you are not sure what is triggering your migraines, keep a diary recording the barometric pressure on the days you get migraines. If you notice there is a correlation, you may be able to save yourself some big headaches—literally.

Keep track of the weather forecast. You can't control the weather, but you can control other variables in your life. If you know the conditions will be right for migraines, take some preventative measures. Practice stress reduction techniques, stay well hydrated, and get plenty of sleep, fresh air, and exercise. If your doctor has prescribed any migraine preventative medication, make sure to take it. All of these things can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.

Seek Chiropractic Care

Upper cervical care is beneficial to many migraine sufferers. When the spine is misaligned it can disrupt the flow of nerve signals in the brain, and this may in part contribute to migraines. Tension and pain caused by misalignments can also increase stress, which contributes to migraine attacks.

Dr. Gordon Elder can help ensure your spine is properly aligned as part of a holistic treatment for migraines. Chiropractic care offers a safe, drug-free, non-invasive treatment option.

Dr. Elder works at the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas. He is a trained practitioner of the Blair Chiropractic Technique. This technique incorporates advanced diagnostic tools and specially trained practitioners to help restore the body's naturally aligned state.

Dr. Elder's plan begins with screening. Using 3D diagnostic imaging tools, he's able to better visualize your unique anatomy and pinpoint problem areas.

In the second step of Dr. Elder's plan, he's able to use those advanced scans to make adjustments with precision. This allows the doctor to use a lighter touch that is much more comfortable for the patient.

Finally, Dr. Elder follows up with regular check-ups to ensure the alignment is holding. This allows him to get ahead of any potential problems in the future through preventative care.

The Importance of Chiropractic Care for Teens

People usually think about visiting a chiropractor after an accident or some kind of sports injury. It is easy to remember to call for an appointment when your back aches or when your neck is stiff. What people forget, unfortunately, is how helpful ongoing chiropractic care can be—for people of all ages.

Teenagers generally benefit greatly from chiropractic care, and early intervention can set young people on the road to good health.

Posture Problems

Many children and teens these days suffer from postural problems. This is because so many young people spend a great deal of their day with their heads extended and facing downward to look at a screen. This position puts an enormous strain on the upper cervical spine.

Many teens suffer from some kind of aches and pains, be it back aches, stiff necks, or headaches. All of these can be due to a misalignment of the spine but few think of telling their parents or doctors until the problem gets severe.

Growing Pains

Growing pains is not just a metaphor for the difficulties of going through common childhood traumas. Teens literally suffer from physical growing pains. As a teen's physical body changes and develops, his center of balance changes. This can lead to misjudgments in how to move or what they are capable of doing. Teens commonly suffer from injuries, falls, muscle strains, and other such problems.

Pushing Limits

From carrying heavy book bags to taking risks in sports to all-night cram sessions, teens don't always make the smartest choices. These choices can have consequences, unfortunately. They serve to weaken the body and put youths more at risk for injury.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

A misaligned spine can cause a wide range of problems. One vertebra out of place can have a domino effect on the rest of the body, leading to all sorts of aches, pains, and health issues. Also, when the spine is misaligned it causes inflammation and swelling, which can compress nerves and disrupt signals between the brain and the body's major systems.

Chiropractic care helps restore proper alignment to the spine relieving many symptoms that may seem unrelated. It also sets the teens on a good path for those crucial years when their musculoskeletal system is still developing by putting them on the right track.

Call Us for Teen Chiropractic Care

Dr. Gordon Elder of the Blair Chiropractic Clinic in Lubbock, Texas takes patients of all ages to help create lasting improvements. Dr. Elder is a practitioner of the Blair Chiropractic Technique, a modern technique that is not like the type of chiropractic care you may be familiar with—there are no sudden jerks or abrupt twists.

Instead, Blair practitioners are upper cervical specialists who rely on state-of-the-art technology to accurately assess each individual's unique anatomy. This is the first step in Dr. Elder's treatment plan—a thorough screening and examination using 3D diagnostic imaging tools.

Once the doctor has assessed your teen's anatomy, he can apply adjustments with more precision. This allows him to use a lighter touch to make corrections gently and swiftly, without any jarring jolts.

Dr. Elder's third step is preventative care. He recommends adding regular chiropractic check-ups to your teen's healthcare routine to help nip problems in the bud.

Set your teen on the path to a healthy life, a strong body, and good health habits. Contact Dr. Elder for a consultation. Dr. Elder's areas of coverage include Lubbock, Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, and El Paso in Texas, as well as Hobbs in New Mexico.

The Impact of Technology on Neck Aches and Pains

As we continue to progress into the digital age, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. However, along with the benefits of convenience and efficiency, there has been an increase in health-related issues directly associated with the use of technology. One such health concern is neck aches and pains, often referred to as 'tech neck' or 'text neck'. This article explores the connection between technology use and neck discomfort, how it happens, and potential solutions for alleviating the associated pain.

Understanding Tech Neck

The term 'tech neck' or 'text neck' refers to a repetitive stress injury that occurs when individuals spend extended periods looking down at electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This prolonged posture leads to excessive strain on the muscles and ligaments in the neck, resulting in stiffness, aches, and pains.

Impact of Technology on Posture

The human neck is designed to support the weight of the head, which typically weighs around 10-12 pounds when in a neutral position. However, for every inch that the head tilts forward, the pressure on the neck doubles. Therefore, constantly looking down at electronic devices can increase this pressure up to five times, causing the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the neck and shoulders to work overtime.

Furthermore, sitting for extended periods while using these devices can lead to poor posture, often characterized by hunched shoulders and a forward head position. This can exacerbate the strain on the neck and upper back, leading to chronic discomfort and potential long-term health problems such as degenerative disc disease or permanent changes in the curvature of the spine.

Symptoms and Consequences

The symptoms of tech neck can vary but often include neck pain, stiffness, and soreness. Other symptoms can include headaches, shoulder pain, and numbness or tingling in the arms or hands. If left unchecked, these symptoms can progress into chronic issues, affecting one's quality of life and potentially leading to more serious conditions like herniated discs and nerve damage.

Prevention and Management

While the increasing reliance on technology in our daily lives makes it challenging to eliminate this problem entirely, several strategies can help manage and prevent tech neck:

  1. Ergonomics: Ensure your workspace is set up ergonomically. The top of your screen should be at eye level, and your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle while typing. When using handheld devices, try to hold them at eye level as much as possible.

  2. Posture Awareness: Regularly check in with your body to ensure you are maintaining good posture. Imagine a string pulling you up from the top of your head, encouraging your neck and back to straighten.

  3. Regular Breaks: Every 20-30 minutes, take a break from your screen. Stand, stretch, and move around to release tension in your muscles and promote blood circulation.

  4. Physical Activity: Regular physical activity can help strengthen the muscles in your neck and back, making them more resilient to strain. Yoga and Pilates, in particular, can be beneficial as they focus on core strength and flexibility.

  5. Exercises and Physical Therapy: If you're already experiencing symptoms, consider seeking help from a physical therapist. They can provide exercises and treatments to relieve pain and correct postural issues.

As we continue to integrate technology into our daily lives, it's essential to be mindful of the potential health impacts. Neck aches and pains resulting from the overuse of technology are a growing concern. However, with awareness, prevention strategies, and timely management, it's possible to balance the use of technology with maintaining our physical health.

How We Treat Technology-Related Neck Aches and Pains

At our clinic, we specialize in treating neck pain caused by technology, known as text neck, by addressing its root cause through the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique. Using sophisticated diagnostic instruments, Blair practitioners work to realign displaced upper cervical vertebrae back to their natural position, thereby easing neck pain symptoms and reigniting the body's natural healing processes.

At our Blair Chiropractic Clinic, the esteemed Blair chiropractor, Dr. Gordon Elder, utilizes a two-tiered strategy for managing neck pain. During your initial visit, Dr. Elder will conduct an evaluation of your spinal health to assess if you have a vertebral misalignment in the upper cervical spine. This preliminary assessment, usually lasting 25-30 minutes, will allow Dr. Elder to propose the most suitable course of action for your treatment.

Should a misalignment be identified, Dr. Elder will implement the second phase of your personalized treatment strategy. Using state-of-the-art 3-D imaging technology, he will evaluate the upper cervical spine to accurately locate the misalignment. You will have the chance to review the outcomes of this analysis and ask any questions you may have for Dr. Elder.

Next, Dr. Elder will administer a sequence of subtle, low-impact adjustments to the primary area of concern. The aim of this stage is to re-establish the natural alignment of the upper cervical spine, eliminating a painful source of neck pressure and jump-starting the body's inherent healing mechanisms.

Post the initial adjustment, patients are advised to return for regular, progressively spaced-out reviews to ascertain that their adjustment has remained intact over a 3-month period. Over the span of 3-5 months, most patients will have an average of 10 to 15 appointments with Dr. Elder.

If neck pain caused by technology is compromising your quality of life, we urge you to contact us for an appointment. Blair Chiropractic Clinic, based in Lubbock, Texas, also caters to patients in Amarillo, Midland, Odessa, Abilene, El Paso in Texas, and Hobbs in New Mexico.

Fibromyalgia Symptoms Can Be Relieved with Exercise

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in localized areas. This disorder, often accompanied by sleep, mood, and memory issues, is believed to amplify painful sensations by affecting the way your brain and spinal cord process pain signals. While the causes of fibromyalgia remain uncertain, strategies to manage the symptoms have been the focus of extensive research, with exercise emerging as a highly effective method. This article aims to delve into how exercise can alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Understanding Fibromyalgia and Exercise

The notion of exercising might seem counterintuitive for people experiencing chronic pain. However, numerous studies have shown that regular physical activity can significantly reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It appears that exercise helps by reducing muscle tension and improving the body's ability to respond to stress.

Types of Exercise Beneficial for Fibromyalgia

  1. Aerobic Exercise: Aerobic exercises, also known as cardio, raise your breathing and heart rates. They include activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or water aerobics. Regular low-impact aerobic exercise can improve heart health, help reduce depression and anxiety, promote better sleep, and manage fibromyalgia pain.

  2. Strength Training: Strength training exercises, like weight lifting or resistance band exercises, can increase muscle strength, combat fatigue, and reduce pain perception.

  3. Flexibility Exercises and Stretching: Activities like yoga and tai chi can improve flexibility, enhance balance, reduce muscle stiffness and pain, and promote relaxation.

  4. Balance and Coordination Exercises: These exercises can help reduce the risk of falls and improve overall mobility. They include activities like tai chi or simple balance exercises.

Exercise Guidelines for Individuals with Fibromyalgia

It's crucial to approach exercise with care when dealing with fibromyalgia. Here are some guidelines to follow:

  1. Start Slow: Begin with low-intensity exercises and gradually increase duration and intensity as your tolerance improves.

  2. Consistency is Key: Regularity is more important than the intensity of workouts. Consistent, moderate exercise is more beneficial than heavy, sporadic activity.

  3. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body's signals. It's essential to balance activity with rest to prevent symptom flares.

  4. Seek Professional Guidance: Working with physical therapists or trained exercise professionals can ensure your regimen is appropriate and safe.

The Science Behind Exercise and Fibromyalgia

Exercise, especially aerobic exercise, has been shown to boost the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, such as endorphins, serotonin, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These chemicals are known to have positive effects on mood, pain perception, and brain function.

Moreover, regular physical activity can improve cardiovascular health, enhance sleep quality, increase strength and flexibility, and boost overall mood—all of which can alleviate fibromyalgia symptoms.

The Psychological Impact of Exercise

Alongside the physical benefits, exercise also provides psychological benefits. Engaging in regular physical activity can instill a sense of control over the illness. It can also boost self-esteem, promote a positive outlook, and provide an avenue for social interaction, further helping manage fibromyalgia symptoms.

While fibromyalgia presents significant challenges, research demonstrates that regular, moderate exercise can play a pivotal role in managing this chronic condition. It's essential to remember that any exercise regimen should be tailored to the individual's capabilities and should ideally be developed with professional guidance.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Can Alleviate Fibromyalgia Symptoms

Getting To The Root Cause of Vertigo

Vertigo, a sensation of feeling off-balance, is often associated with a perception of spinning or swaying when you're stationary. This condition can be quite unsettling and might be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and balance problems. Vertigo is not a disease itself, but rather a symptom of various conditions, mainly related to issues in the inner ear or brain. Let's delve deeper into the causes of vertigo to understand its underlying mechanisms.

Peripheral Vertigo

  1. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo. It occurs when tiny calcium particles clump up in the inner ear canals, causing brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. BPPV can occur for no known reason and may be associated with age.

  2. Meniere's Disease: This is an inner ear disorder caused by a buildup of fluid and changing pressure in the ear that can cause episodes of vertigo along with tinnitus (ringing in the ear) and hearing loss. The exact cause of Meniere's disease is still unknown, though it is believed to be related to viral infections of the inner ear, head injury, or genetic predisposition.

  3. Vestibular Neuritis or Labyrinthitis: These are inflammation of the inner ear usually caused by viral infections, resulting in dizziness and loss of balance. The inflammation causes a disruption in the transmission of sensory information from the ear to the brain.

  4. Migraines: Some people may experience vertigo and other types of dizziness before they have a migraine or even without a headache.

Central Vertigo

  1. Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): A stroke or TIA in the brainstem or cerebellum can cause vertigo. These areas of the brain control balance and coordination, and disruption in their function can lead to feelings of vertigo.

  2. Multiple Sclerosis: This is a disease of the nervous system that affects the brain and spinal cord. Vertigo can be an early symptom of MS.

  3. Acoustic Neuroma: This is a benign growth or tumor on the nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain. Along with vertigo, symptoms may include hearing loss and tinnitus.

  4. Migraines: Just as with peripheral vertigo, migraines can also cause central vertigo.

Vertigo is a complex symptom that can be a signal of various underlying conditions, most commonly those affecting the inner ear or brain. If you're experiencing vertigo, it's essential to seek medical advice. Through accurate diagnosis and treatment, the underlying cause of vertigo can often be effectively managed, leading to an improvement in symptoms. The management of vertigo involves a multidisciplinary approach that could include medications, physical maneuvers, vestibular rehabilitation therapy, lifestyle changes, or in some cases, surgery. Always consult with a healthcare professional to understand the best options for your specific condition.

How We Can Help Alleviate Vertigo

Dr. Gordon Elder is a practitioner of the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique. This chiropractic care approach utilizes diagnostic imaging to gently realign the upper cervical spine, thereby restoring natural spinal column function and reinvigorating the body's innate healing processes.

In treating vertigo, Dr. Elder employs a two-phase method to identify and address the condition. The first step involves a screening process to ascertain whether a spinal misalignment might be triggering your vertigo. Initial screening sessions typically last between 25 to 30 minutes.

If a misalignment is identified, your initial consultation will be followed by a second appointment. During this session, Dr. Elder will apply advanced 3-D imaging tools to accurately determine the exact location and angle of your vertebral misalignment. Afterward, you'll receive a comprehensive report detailing the findings of your consultation. You'll also have the opportunity to ask Dr. Elder any queries you may have about your treatment plan.

To rectify your misalignment, Dr. Elder will implement a series of gentle, precise adjustment techniques to realign the misaligned vertebrae back to their natural position. This process aids in reducing inflammation in the surrounding areas and promoting normal nerve flow.

After the initial adjustment, patients are advised to return for regular check-ups, which will be spaced out to ensure that the adjustment remains intact over a period of 3 months. Over a span of 3-5 months, most patients typically have between 10 and 15 appointments with Dr. Elder.

Sleeping with Neck Pain: What Are The Best Positions?

Neck pain can be a debilitating condition that affects various aspects of a person's life, including their sleep quality. It is often caused by a variety of factors such as poor posture, stress, injuries, or underlying health conditions. The sleep position you choose can significantly impact your neck pain, either exacerbating it or alleviating it. Along with optimizing your sleep position, upper cervical chiropractic care can also play a vital role in managing and reducing neck pain.

Best Sleep Positions for Neck Pain

Back Sleeping with a Cervical Pillow

One of the best sleep positions for neck pain is on your back. This position keeps your spine aligned, reducing the risk of waking up with a stiff neck. Use a cervical pillow that has a curved design to support the natural shape of your neck. The pillow should maintain the curvature of your neck and support your head adequately without elevating it excessively.

Side Sleeping with a Supportive Pillow

Side sleeping is another favorable position as it keeps your spine elongated and prevents neck and back discomfort. Ensure that the pillow you use is supportive enough to fill the gap between your shoulder and neck. The right pillow should keep your neck parallel to the mattress and not tilt your head upwards or downwards.

Avoid Stomach Sleeping

Stomach sleeping is generally not recommended if you're dealing with neck pain. This position forces you to turn your head to one side, which puts your neck and spine out of alignment, causing unnecessary strain.

While the best sleep position for neck pain depends on individual preferences and comfort, sleeping on your back or side with a supportive pillow generally offers the most relief. However, addressing the root cause of neck pain often requires more than just adjusting your sleep position. Upper cervical chiropractic care can be an effective approach to address underlying structural issues contributing to neck pain.

How Our Neck Pain Treatment Works

In addition to improving your sleep position, upper cervical chiropractic care can be a critical component of a holistic approach to alleviate neck pain. This specialized area of chiropractic focuses on the top two vertebrae in the neck area, the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). These vertebrae are crucial because they support the head's weight and allow for a wide range of head movement.

Our neck pain treatment strategy hinges on identifying and addressing the root cause of the issue utilizing the Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic Technique. By leveraging cutting-edge diagnostic tools, practitioners following the Blair methodology can realign misplaced upper cervical vertebrae, thus mitigating symptoms of neck pain and kick-starting the body's innate healing processes.

At our Blair Chiropractic Clinic, our seasoned Blair chiropractor, Dr. Gordon Elder, employs a two-tiered approach to manage neck pain. In your initial visit, Dr. Elder will conduct an evaluation of your spinal health to assess if you have a misalignment in the upper cervical spine. This evaluation, which usually takes 25-30 minutes, will enable Dr. Elder to provide you with appropriate recommendations for ongoing treatment.

If a misalignment is discovered, the next step of your treatment regimen will be initiated by Dr. Elder. To accurately identify the misalignment's location, he will utilize a variety of 3-D imaging techniques to scrutinize the upper cervical spine and locate the exact point of vertebral misalignment. You'll be given a chance to discuss the results of this procedure and pose any questions you may have to Dr. Elder.

Subsequently, Dr. Elder will conduct a series of delicate, low-impact adjustments targeting the primary area of concern. The aim of this stage is to reestablish the natural alignment of the upper cervical spine, alleviating a source of painful neck pressure and stimulating the body's inherent healing mechanisms.

After the initial adjustment, patients are encouraged to come back for regular check-ups, which will be gradually spaced out to ensure the adjustment remains in place over a period of 3 months. Over a span of 3-5 months, most patients will have between 10 and 15 appointments with Dr. Elder.

A Natural and Alternative Treatment Method for Kyphosis

Kyphosis is a spinal condition characterized by an abnormal, exaggerated curvature of the upper back, often resulting in a rounded or hunched appearance. Understanding the causes, signs, and symptoms of kyphosis is essential for early intervention and treatment. If you suspect that you or a loved one may have kyphosis, it is important to consult a healthcare professional, such as an upper cervical specialist, for a thorough assessment and appropriate treatment options.

What Is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis, also known as hyperkyphosis or roundback, is a condition where the upper back, or thoracic region of the spine, has an excessive forward curvature, exceeding the normal range of 20-50 degrees. The spine naturally curves in the neck, upper back, and lower back to help absorb shock and support the head's weight. When the vertebrae (spinal bones) become misshapen, the natural curve may become more pronounced than usual, leading to kyphosis.

The Signs and Symptoms of Kyphosis

The severity of kyphosis can vary, and individuals with mild kyphosis might not notice any signs or symptoms. However, those with moderate to severe kyphosis may experience the following:

  • A visible rounding or hump in the upper back

  • Back pain or stiffness

  • Fatigue in the back muscles

  • Limited range of motion in the spine

  • Difficulty maintaining an upright posture

  • In severe cases, pressure on the spine and lungs, leading to breathing difficulties

It is important to note that not all people with kyphosis will experience pain or discomfort. Some individuals may only become aware of the condition due to its impact on their appearance.

The Causes of Kyphosis

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of kyphosis. Some of the common causes include:

  • Poor posture: Prolonged slouching or hunching over can cause postural kyphosis, particularly in younger individuals.

  • Age-related degeneration: Degenerative kyphosis can occur in older adults due to age-related wear and tear on the spinal discs and vertebrae.

  • Osteoporosis: This bone-weakening disease can result in spinal compression fractures, leading to kyphosis.

  • Scheuermann's disease: A condition that affects adolescents, causing the vertebrae to grow unevenly and resulting in kyphosis.

  • Congenital issues: Some individuals may be born with spinal abnormalities that cause kyphosis.

  • Spinal injuries or surgeries: Trauma or surgery to the spine can lead to the development of kyphosis.
